And now .. with Furniture ...

My goodness that bed is heavy.

Still, I couldn't stand it a moment longer, I *had* to see what it would look like on carpet.
Pretty darn good, it turns out..

    bedroom-014edit-web

and my mustard vinyl armchair looks fabbo on it.

    mustardchairbedroom

I was looking at bedside tables and etc yesterday online, but they inspire in me the same kind
of meh i've always felt when looking at coffee tables.  Therefore, i've always compromised
    and improvised on both.

You know .. like milk crates .. or .. maybe besser blocks and planks of wood for a classier look.
ok, so that was a long time ago.. but still..

I think i'll be making my own.  That's an old crate next to my bed at the moment ..
the carpet deserves something a bit more upmarket though - something more chic.
But still like me, so not that chic ..
    A compromise.

I love how the Pride of Madeira we planted outside the bedroom window is getting so big..
the leaves are gorgeous presed up against the glass...

Gaga over Gaia :: Love the Look

    My Carpet arrived yesterday!

We've carpeted both the bedrooms, and chose the Gaia Wool Collection,
    exclusive to Carpet Court.

I've never bought carpet before and if you haven't either, you will find there is
a LOT of it in store, and it's kinda overwhelming if you don't know your loop
from your plush from your twist.

    Carpet In!

I started by looking ( a LOT ) at the Carpet Court website.

    Things I knew:

    - I like natural products whenever possible
    - I have kids, and cats
    - I love a loop pile
    - I have cats.  With claws.  So no loop pile.
    - I didn't want a carpet that left vacuum cleaner lines
    - that's about it

    So .. pretty easy.
A cut pile, in wool.  I think ??!?

    Carpet In!

Doing your homework first online really helps in store I think.

I suggest compiling a shortlist of carpets & colours you think you'll like, then pop in.

I found once in store, it was then easy to then whittle that list right on down when talking
with a consultant about care ( it was in-store I learned that PLUSH carpet was the stuff
that left the vacuum cleaner lines, so an automatic line went through I a whole heap of
products I was going to look at

They also knew how to work those rolls and samples quickly, as I had kids in tow ..

Too brown, too blue, that's nice, wrong blend, too mottled, ooh, yum, what about that,
no that, and the other one?  Hmm, yep, nope, the first one, ok, yes, done.

I also had to force myself not to look at the loop designs.
Those cats are lucky I like them a lot, I swear.

    Carpet In!

And this is what I ended up with:
GAIA Wool Carpet, from The Rivers Collection, and I bought "Swan" - as in the Swan River.

    Hello Perth!

I'm a sucker for a good name, or one that resonates.  All the GAIA collections are
locally named, and I admit I was hoping for a Melbourne experience
( we laughed that there was no "Yarra" to chose from in the Rivers Collection ..
the poor old Yarra .. it gets such a bad colour rap ...
    )

But we could have bought Sorrento, darling ( Coast Collection ), and I was looking at
Southbank form the ParkLife Collection for a while too .. that combines Melbourne
( and Blur ).. or any number of Numbats and Eucalypts.  A bit of Australiana, darl!

    Carpet In!

    Pretty, isn't it?

Next job is to get my bed in there and out of my front room.

    Might go do that now.

    Countdown!

It's been 6months!  The lease is up!  Time to u-haul home!

So, this was the weekend past:  we had lots of things to do, which meant staying past dusk
and getting to play with the lights ( ooh! )

    pre-floorsblog1

As you can see, my stove is now in!  Bought cheap ex scratch-and-dent before the reno
ever started, freighted from Sydney sight unseen.  Phew, it looks ok ;)  I really wanted a
dual oven, but not a wall oven.  I'm looking forward to honing in on my suzie homemaker
    mad skillz  ;)

Down the hallway .. my exposed brick wall is looking the goods, and the drum pendants
are perfect.  I had a cut out of those pendants blu-taced to my laundry wall for like 2years ..
luckily they didn't go out of fashion!

    Finally .. my bedroom..

The WIR is now in, and the funky bedroom light that will make instant wallpaper patterns
    on my wall.  Love.

    pre-floorsblog2

Just the carpet to go in now.  I have picked a Carpet Court exclusive - the GAIA wool range,
and from that, the Rivers Collection ( go look at the names - I am a sucker for a good product
    name and feeling *invested*
) .. so I picked the colour Swan.  As in the Swan River, Perth.
Makes me feel all dinky-di and patriotic.  I had to laugh they didn't have a Yarra River to
choose from.  I probably would have picked it too.  The poor old Yarra gets a bit of a bad rap :/

I would have loved to have gone a loop pile .. but i'm worried one of my naughty cats might
pull at it when my back is turned and then I would cry.  So a cut twist pile it is.
I can't wait to see it installed!

Today they are waxing my boards. I went with an oil/wax combo rather than your usual poly.
No idea how that will go, but I want the grain and depth of the wood to be cranked, and
apparently this will do it. The wood is still a lot lighter than I prefer it, although I know from
wood-bought-past that it does indeed darken with age and exposure to sunlight.

I want my boards to look like an old ship's deck, me hearties!

This is how it looks with just the oil so far:

Wacky angles due to me just sticking my head around the doors etc.
    Very tasty!

    Well, I can't believe we're finally here!
I kinda have to keep pinching myself that it's true!

    What's in a Name?

that which we call Wormy Chestnut
By any other name would look as hut*

    wormychestnut

    You likey?
    I likey!

I thought our prev floorboards were fine, but you know, with the this and the that and some issues we have with levels and stuff .. it was cheaper to dump and run anew.

There was some stress with the levels in the fact my builder felt the best option would be to carpet offending 'lowered' areas to bring them up to height.  Those areas would be my studio and front room, which I kinda love the way they are

    finishedrooms

    So I to'd and fro'd.

And eventually we shook hands on a floating floorboard in those rooms.
It seems a bit of a pity, but the wood I picked has lots of old-style character and flaws so I think it will work ok.  Basically, we buy in two depths .. regular & lite, I guess.  Full fat Cap' for the most of the house, and a skinny decaf latté for the front rooms.  Done.

It's also a heap cheaper than Tas Oak .. which is the industry-quote-standard.

So yay, I picked me some bargain floor and saved us some money!

Which is good, because I seem to have put a big wad of gift cards we'd nervously been saving and storing ( ok, so I was the nervous hoarder ) and well .. I think I hid them somewhere stupid over the holidays and I think they went out with the recycling :/

I'm not sure i'd be as forgiving as my husband if the roles were reversed.
I'm pretty upset about it, truth be told.  Have flipped this place numerous times.

Naturally, i've also been googling early-onset dementia and et-cet-era .. because .. well, shit .. I think i'm losing it.  My mind.  My short term memory.

Hopefully with a step back from work this year .. maybe if I learned how to unwind ...

What is your mind? - A STEEL SPRING!
What is it going to do? - YESTERDAY! )

    Huh?
Yes, well, with apologies to Gallipoli .. Hurl me down the track, brain, and let me recall in vivid detail every moment of October 2nd, 1994 ... but today is worrying me.  Just a little.  My brain hurts.

But back to Wormy Chestnut, which sounds like something diseased and looks like a ship's deck.
    I love it.

We got the salesguy that kinda shrugged and scratched himself, but the google in the car ride home was more enthusiastic..

    Salesblurb:

No two pieces of Australian Wormy Chestnut are ever the same.

Deep in the forests of southern eastern Australia, the trees are affected by wildfires, years of drought, attack by insects, the occasional flood and winds so strong that the trees stunt their growth to cope with the environment. It is from these trees that Australian Wormy Chestnut is born with each piece showing nature's signature. Deep red gum veins formed by fire, ambrosia beetle marks, pin holes and squiggly worm marks are all reflected in Australian Wormy Chestnut.

Oooh, sexy imperfect Australiana, the perfect battler wood to spill your tinny on.

    Or your G&T.  You know.
Or the French Champagne I will be christening my new kitchen with.
    Oh Lordy Yes

    * use a Nu Zelund accent, eh?

Happy Camper :: Love the Look

    carpetcourt-hbfotografic-befores-blog1

Today I found out that I am the grand winner of the Carpet Court "Love the Look" Promotion.

I am typing very calmly, in a sensible font, but OMG, in my head it's a bubbling jumble of Comic Sans meets Jokerman RIOT.

    I AM SO EXCITED!

    carpetcourt-hbfotografic-befores-blog5

To win I portrayed some parts of my home I absolutely love, that we have worked on, fixed up and adore.

In fact, you might get the impression i've got it all covered.

But ah, that is the magic of selective sharing ...

    carpetcourt-hbfotografic-befores-blog2

So here are some other glimpses of my home.

The ancient frayed rug .. a couch my kids and the cats have teamed together to make .. extra special ..

Light fittings a-la-go-go  ( the middle IKEA lamp is the only light in my kitchen )

    Chipped laminex and chipboard kitchen

    Leaks & cracks

    carpetcourt-hbfotografic-befores-blog4

    And finally .. carpet ... I don't mind the petrol-coloured carpet in the boy's bedroom .. it's just a pity it doesn't reach the wall ( why? )

And, of course, the original Westminster in our bedroom .. which I kinda like for the quirk factor, and really, for 60yr old carpet, is in pretty good nick ( in parts ) ..

    carpetcourt-hbfotografic-befores-blog3

I'll be interested to hear what fantastic advice Stacey Kouros comes up with .. but one thing's for sure.. there's no lack of projects to choose from ;)

Thankyou Carpet Court, you're the best!
