    Firsts

    - ride to hospital in an ambulance ( most cool, I must say, whee ! )
    - stay overnite on a cot in emergency ( not cool at all, I ache all over )

Also the first time I did not recognise my own. Scanning the crowd at kinder, I totally overlooked my cow-faced boy as I searched for the human-child I left there that morning...

Anyway, the constant state of colds over here has been frustratingly stubborn. Lingering.

Then the youngest one barked at me two nights ago, like a dog. We planned to take him to the Docs today, but last night he stopped breathing. Several times. Only for 5secs a piece ( about the time it takes to react a breath out of him ), but then he would rapid pant to make up for the breath. He did this 5 or 6 times, it was pretty scary. So we wake up the elder and off to hospy we go.

Anyway, to cut a long story short, we're home now. No-one knows what he's got, it's difficult to determine - but maybe croup, maybe bronchiolitis, maybe a common cold. I got 3hours sleep ( to the Doc that woke me at 5am when I only closed my eyes at 4am, you weren't my favourite ).

They wanted to keep us another night, but I really wanted to come home. Of all the shifts that asked the same questions and performed the same tests, the opinion was the same - that all you could do is wait for his body to oust it and keep an eye on him.

And he really is ok, we're just not used to sickness here..

... - oh, and edited to add ... early this morning, waiting to be discharged, an oldish women was wheeled by on a guerney.
"Oh no ! A dead person!" said MC rather loudly and clearly.
It was pretty funny really ... although maybe not for the lady involved ....

How scary that must have been for you. If you're anything like me, you were probably imagining the worst.
Poor little fella. Look at his serious eyes!
    Get well soon.

That must have been a bit scary, and hopefully all will be okay now, but that is one very cute pouty face looking over the top of the blanket in that photo.

What is it with croupy/chesty second children? As if we're not run off our feet as it is.
The breath-stopping sounds scary. I hope he's much better today.

When I had croupy troubles with Lincoln I would race him into the ensuite with the blasting hot shower. Steam Steam Steam. Not sure if it did much to clear the airway but the distraction was enough to stop the barking.

He looks like a little lost lamb in the hospital bed photo.

I hope that you both sleep well tonight.

We had the VERY SAME thing with Numbah One Son, and he is fine.

But he did bear watching for a couple of years.

I too have had a couple of rides in an ambo with the girls and have endured the old cot bed - not fun and really exhausting. Daphne had that awful barking when she was under one and the steamy shower used to work a treat. That photo is so ridiculously gorgeous though - bless him what a sweetie!

Those hospital cot beds are NOT at all conducive to sleep of any kind. I hope you have a better night at home.

MC's comment about the old lady on the guerney? Hilarious. Can't imagine it was for the lady though, hope she was in a coma and didn't hear.

Ack, bronchiolitis is really, really horrible. Poor little guy - the picture of him in bed is heartbreaking. Love your other monkey's painted face though, and I'm glad you're home again.

Oh dear, hospitals are just not fun for littlies. Been there often enough but not that young. Hope all is better soon.

He does look extra cute in the hospital cot 'though!

    Yikes! Sounds scary.

Do you find yourself handling emergencies and illness better as a second-time parent?

i totally freak out when mine cough so hard i am standing by waiting for the lung to come out...

Oh dear, poor little man. And the rest of you too... always terrible when little ones are sick and to see them in those big white hospital beds... Hospital staff are great at watching parents, waiting for them to fall asleep, and then coming in to do something "Very Important" which of course involves waking the parent! (obviously not knowledge from being a mum, but being one of those hospital staff working on kids' ward...)
Hope he's feeling well soon, poor little man.

ps. love the dead person comment too... used to have students who would make the same mistake!
