    BB - Before Blogger

    May 4, 1986

"Tomorrow I have to go to (town) to a dumb picnic for Dad's work. How extraordinarily boring..."

I kept a diary for every day for all of my High School Years.
I did not write anything worthy of history or keeping.
I have decided that if I died, I really really don't want anyone reading them.
Not that there's anything incriminating in them, they're just so ... naff...

So i'm getting rid of them. Shredding them. Burning them.
But before that, I will do a flick through, and occasionally I might upload.

Every year I bought the same diary, the Collins Kingsgrove No. 181.
I used to also decorate it with pics from "Dolly" Magazine.

Not sure why i'd want to see a Eurogliders video - I remember thinking they were 'pox' ??
Bit embarrassing about the Jimmy Barnes too...

Am I naff to still think this chick looks hot ? I love her jacket, and that hair !! - So Dolly.
I want them both. Even now.

I have a whole drawer full of my old junior high / high school / college journals and I absolutely cringe every time I look inside one of them. I thought I was so deep, and I was really only self centered, overly sentimental, and boy crazy!!

I think that hair is fantastic! It might almost be my dream haircut...

I kept a diary for about a week. Which is why I am surprised still that I have stuck to this blogging caper for so long.

Diaries did not appeal to me. I blog for the response - it is so much more interactive.

Embrace 80s H&B, jimmy, eurogliders and all. She must have been way cool. She did turn into you...

"Baby's Coming Back" was one of my fave Eurythmics videos too. So 80's, so cool.

I think everyone who grew up in that period has developed exactly the same handwriting. Strange.
I loved the badge en masse look - mine were all over a hessian rucksack from Aussie Disposals.
Great hair. I'd wear it right now.

H&B - GET YOUR HANDS IN THE AIR AND STEP AWAY FROM THE DIARIES...

Seriously, DO NOT destroy these. Diaries are such a rare historical resource nowadays. They may seem naff, and that's because teenagers thoughts always seem naff to the adult they become. But that was you, that was reality. It has captured a slice of life at that time. The Dolly pics, the decorations. How many other chronicles of music video watching do you think are out there?

    Please, please don't destroy them.

I've fallen in love with your teenage mini-rebel who slacks her homework one night knowing she'll have to slog tomorrow. I think you should keep her! You might love her again in your 60s..

that pic is SO DOLLY! I remember driving to queensland in a van with the family and my older sister bought a Dolly mag and for about 48hrs straight I stared at that cover. I still remember it so clearly and th covergirl was some shaggy blonde bobbed chic very similar to that chic.

anyhoo, I was a diary keeper. I ditched them a few years ago. straight in the bin, hopefully not to be discovered in the tip by some hobo.

I burned my old diaries years ago, in a bbq, I couldn't live thinking someone else might read them one day - so purile.
Oh DOLLY, how I loved Dolly (& Duran Duran, *blush*)

    omg .do.not.throw.them .out.

oh god, where do I start? I remember that Dolly picture. I had a denim jacket that I pinned about 5 badges on and I was certain that I had recreated that look. My hair was cut in a bob too - a permed bob. A bizzare concept for anyone who knows my dead straight hair.

Eurogliders! I loved them. "We will together", "heaven" "absolutely", "can't wait to see you". Didnt they go to merimbula rsl? I know icehouse did. I sat outside on the roundabout out the back outside the national bank, eating pizza and singing "well, you've got to be crazy baby, to want a guy like me". OK enough about me.

    Dolly 4 eva !

    Hair = cool.
    Jacket = naff.

PS That's nifty, that comment thing, but I bet you say that to all the girls

And I really like the borders you drew, and the stuck in pics from Dolly, they're rad.

I love her - the hair, the whole look - such good memories! No wonder you write so well - you had a lot of practice!

Ha! I was just on my way here to comment about your handwriting being a lot like mine is and I see that Stacey has already beat me to it! Do you still write that way?

I recently came across several of my childhood diaries. It made me laugh to see them. Several of them have combination "locks" on them that I couldn't remember the combinations to. Mr. B helped me "break into" them. I couldn't bear to throw them away yet. So they went back into a box of keepsakes that I can't quite get rid of yet.

Ah. This makes me feel young again.

Alas, I never kept a diary...instead I just paid very, very close attention to what I was doing.

Which means I remember all the awful and stupid things I've ever done, always, but unless a clairvoyant pops by, I'm not worried about my secrets emerging.

Well, not my really embarrassing secrets.

My diaries were all truly cringeworthy affairs. Goodness knows what happened to the early ones, - the latter are waiting to be shredded.

Oh it is funny to look back at high school stuff isn't it.

I had all these kaz cooke and anne geddes diaries that I used for school/homework stuff - but they are filled with notes to and from friends, drawing, stupid comments, "MP luvs SE" kind of stuff. There are pics cut out and stuck in (from dolly of course) and they bring back so many memories.

I attempted to keep a diary many times but I kept editing myself. I always felt silly writing for no audience!

Oh, don't burn them! You will treasure them someday. I kept a journal staring when I was 12. It went sporadic while I was in college and working, but .... I couldn't imagine tossing them!

PS I love the hair and jacket too.

Stacey - I wish you'd stop being me. Did we all carry those hessian rucksacks from the Army Disposal store ??

    Stomper - I know .. I was a lame teen ... *sigh*

DMM - i'd still see Duran Duran.. in a flash ...

V&R - *Everyone* went to the Merimbula RSL - it was the ultimate overnight pitstop gig btn Sydney and Melbourne ;)

    thirdcat - no .. only you ...

joke - I wish i'd kept more things to myself ... ack ..

And to all those who say 'keep', you were too late already ... perhaps if i'd had girl-children, but no .. and boys don't wanna know about their mother having crushes and obsessing over crap...

I'm with the DON'T BURN brigade. I have my high school diaries and they are SO SO SO embarrassing but, still, critical important documents for understanding what my daughter will be thinking/going through in a few years...and I'm terrified.
