    What Lies Beneath

It all started rather innocently on the Thursday.

The drought has made the backyard shrink & retract, and like a bad case of gum disease, buried bricks from ancient pathways and borders have been revealing themselves to me.

My backyard is full of such treasures.

On Friday ( after breaking yet another trowel through inappropriate usage ), I decided I wanted one of those long crowbars the fencing and deck guys used.

There was a slab of concrete in the middle of the yard. It served no purpose, but it was damn heavy to lift ( i'd levered it up before to check it wasn't covering up a well shaft or other such horror ).

Look how dead my grass is !

The boy and I filled this in with cheap potting mix and grass seed. I'm hoping to get some rain soon, and some green ... we'll see ...

This morning I got up with one task in mind.

I knew about some buried concrete ( an old garden border ??? ), and i'd been meaning to get it up and out. The lack of water has made the kikuyu weak, and the soil is dry. No better time than the present. And I wanted to play with my new fencing post/crowbar thing.

    I know, i'm a bit weird.

So what I thought was a small slab was actually a HUGE L-shape of solid concrete of 1x1metres ! I have to say I am most impressed with getting this out - it wasn't easy !

    I rule !

I bet more concrete is still buried around the place, but I think this will do for now.

We're hiding the diggings behind the greenhouse until we have enough for another skip ( probably if/when we re-do the front yard ). It's certainly too big & heavy for me to do the ol' 'stick it in the regular weekly rubbish pickup and hope no-one notices' trick.

Now, for some rain to re-green the lawn in time for the boy's upcoming party festivities. .. that would be nice...

Cor, Superwoman. I hope you don't waste money on gym memberships. This could be a whole new get fit campaign: Excavating Melbourne's Backyards...

Umm, what can I say? It's a rather odd hobby? But good to see that you are passionate about it. We bought another hose fitting thingy for the pipe thingy that the washing machine water goes out of and you connect it to the thingy and it goes out on the lawn. No, lawn is being to generous - parched earth with weeds. Do you know the one I'm talking about? Another one, because the dog keeps eating them. Ah, the joys of Melbourne backyards....

My goodness me! Don't you realise that you could break a finger nail like that?

Bet you slept well after all that digging and hauling.

Have you ever thought about hosting your own 'Backyard Blitz' type TV show? I think you appeared on the wrong show (meaning 'Deal' here). You are one hard working woman!! My hands ache just reading your posts sometimes ;-)
