A quick scourge of my drunken 20-something brain to come up with some of the hits I remember blasting at every nightclub I ever went to in the 90's.
Banana Alley, Redheads, and some dodgy place on Lygon St because a friend of a friend worked the bar. The place was crap, but the drinks were free, or heavily discounted.
Then we'd move on to somewhere better when she finished her shift.
Closing time was always spelled out by a 3am rendition of "New York, New York" ( do they still do that ? ).
And in case you thought I was classy ?:
The night a bouncer found me sleeping on the loo ( fully clothed, lid down, just resting ) at The Tunnel and it was 7am and daylight already. My friends could party harder than I, and i'd taken a little rest until they were ready to go home. In the end they left, thinking i'd nicked off without them.
He then drove me back to my friend's place, and I made him drop me off at a stranger's door so he didn't come back for that tentative 'date' I was finding it hard to say no to - I just wanted a ride home. Nice.
But dude, The Tunnel ?
And you don't hit on skanky girls who fall asleep there.
And I think he was on the 'roids. Definitely channelling Right Said Fred.
I remember showering, changing, and then going for beers at the Dog's Bar in St Kilda a bit later. My girlfriend got a thickshake from McDonalds and threw it up again in the park across from Luna Park after we went on the old roller coaster.
And yet, so cool, still so cool ...
Or so we thunk ?

Oh. I dont know that I want to remember too much about the 90's. My era was before this, & probably before you were born!! HAHA.
Though reading your account, though the times & fashions change, some of the -ahem- antics, don't really!
Oh, the Tunnel. That is quite sad. Though I could never, ever do the 7am thing, so you get points for that.
I prefer not to consider the thickshake and Luna Park combination any further.
Hilarious! I think your story of falling asleep in the loo til morning surely beats my recollection of dancing backwards (read: falling) through fire escape doors (three times) in another establishment.
Start spreading the news ...
Ahh yes, good old New York, New York. I love that bouncer story... we did take some risks didn't we. Having daughters completely freaks me out sometimes!
I used to be friends with the redhead that Redheads was named for. She and I were in an 'interpretive dance piece' together once. Oh god the memories. We were very serious and precocious about it.
Hey, I see from your sidebar that the Wiggles wear suits now! They've gone all classy then?! I used to go and see them (with my toddlers) at the Essendon town hall and they wore skivvies, and jumped off the stage at the end to come and sell merchandise and pose with the kiddies. (Son #1 has a photo of him with the red one).
I remember New York New York, the Armadale and the Tok H!!.....I am dating myself here

Ah, pure class ;-)
uli - I didn't do the 7am thing - i'd probably been asleep there for at least 4hours.
I don't know if that's more sad or skanky ?
and yes, Louise - "there but for the Grace of God go I"
Suse, you're just plain scaring me. Interpretive Dance ? bwah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha :p
Oh those were the days weren't they? *giggle giggle*
You've visited some dodgy places in your past haven't you? Now, off to listen to your tape.
Ooh The Tunnel! You city types.
I was more of a ETs, Derbys, Chasers kinda girl (oh and the Sherlock Holmes on a Friday night in the hope of meeting a nice stockbroker).
I fell asleep at the bar at the Chevron and threw up at that place in Ferntree Gully near the Swagman.
Oh and I once promised a "date" in return for a ride home. I bailed at the traffic lights once we got close to my house.
We probably slept in the same toilets at some point.
Interpretive dance???
I wasn't cool enough for Banana Alley & I liked my sleep too. "Cream"...sensational.
Ah. Youth.
Interestingly enough, your mix tape has a LOT of overlap with my MP3 playlist. The early 90s were the very last vestige of twilight in my Wilderness Years and, I'm amazed and vaguely surprised that more or less the same things were going on at the same time across the globe, diagonally.

I love your mixtape, especially C&C Music Factory!! My husband still listens to Black Box in his car - classic! I think back to dodgy nights at the Chevron and the Black Match in Richmond. I can't remember what the club in Banana Alley was called, do you?
I was much more a grungy-band go-er in the early 90s, but I recall on night in the early 90s when I rocked on to LOUNGE after a big night out and in the wee small hours, very drunk, fell down the stairs...got packed into a taxi home to Richmond. In the morning, Mothers Day, hopped onto the train to visit Mum (lots of funny looks) and turned up at her front door with dried blood and bruises all over my face! Hadn't thought to check the mirror before I left home. Imagine what a lovely surprise she got THAT day?
