I figured letting it ripen on the tree was best, and it was being left alone by both bird & bug.
No worries.
Someone ( my mum ? ) said "the birds will know when the fruit is ripe before you do"
And that person was right.
This morning I was greeted with the aftermath of a peach orgy.
In my backyard.
I imagine the birds were toga-clad, such was the level of debauchery...
So the first ripe peach was on a tree not in a flight path.
It was stolen from the tree i've bought my sister that I had tucked away 'down the side'. She's offline at the moment, so won't know of my sin until after Christmas.
And it was perfect.
By the way, this scared the crap out of me this morning as I was absentmindedly, barefootedly dumping the washing machine water on the plants. I actually jumped back
It's a holy snappin' crocodile head.
As you were.

That crocodile head is an absolute cracker!
Thanks to Shula I was inspired to buy a second hand Fowlers Vacola to preserve fruit in. It came with a recipe for preserving a "fruit Salad" of peaches, apricots, pears, bananas etc . It sounds fantastic. Perhaps with your next crop (next summer by the sounds of it) - you might want to join the preserving gang. Provided the baby will let you!
That's hilarious that Croc head!!!
Bloody birds. Its true that the birds know when the fruit is ripe for eating. Maybe plastic bags tied to the limbs might scare 'em off. Well, that's what my mum does. I guess it works...
And that peach looks mighty fine!!
When my pears and figs are ripe, we could get together and make fruit salad. Either that or local bird variety pie.
Holy snappin' crocodile head! I would have probably stamped on the poor bugger in terror.
Totally love (and chuckling at) the croc in the bark.
Now my idea for the fruit trees is to hang all those unfortunate CD purchases you made in the late 80s, early 90s. Mel and Kim, etc. :)
That photo of your boy eating the peach is just gorgeous. I hope the birds don't get all your peaches.
Every year the hirds get my strawberries before I do. *Every year*. You'd think I would have learned by now. Nope.
Brilliant! I still sometimes come across dinosaurs in the garden, dinossaurs or little rubber mice, such sweet reminders of when my boys were little.

Hee hee!
Ahh the little known bark chip crocodile...they'll take a chunk out of your toe before you know what has hit you.
Yes, beware the pine chip crocodile. So dangerous.
Exclusion bags are the go for preventing ravening birds/possums/bats decimating your fruit crop. Also works for fruit fly, I believe. Check Greenharvest for info.
Wishing you a terrific Christmas!
Lol - Love the croc head pic.
