The good thing about a Daddy having a b'day 4 days before the main event is that you can use him as a 'testing board'. As one that hasn't baked since High School, I learned a few good things today.
Like: I need a manual egg beater thingy ( not an egg whisk ).
An electric mixer is a waste of money for me, the annual cake-baker, and my beloved stick-mixer is no good for thick stuff like cake batter and icing. So it seems ... not that they could tell..
But I made a yummy dinner. Good steak cooked on my new IKEA grill-pan with Neil Perry butter, new carrots, fresh asparagus and potatoes roasted with fresh rosemary from the garden.
T'was yummy.
Both boys are asleep. "Desperate Housewives" is on in the background.
Welcome to my world ;)

That looks excellent! How did everything else go? Lovely ambience you've set up as well ;)
What a dinner - looks delicious. You know those electric hand mixers are so cheap and you may have to whip cream one day!
good luck with the party!!
Yumbo! That dinner looks fantastic. The men in your life are lucky lads.
You tried making a cake with an egg whisk? Brave woman!! Off to the shop with you. The manual ones work well, espcially to tone the arms, but the electric ones just do all the work and do everything but bake the cake!
Your dinner looks fantastic. Happy birthday to the older birthday person!
As everyone else has said, looks like a delicious culinary evening. And even the cake looks good, although from the candles/sparklers we have no idea how old the old man is.
Dinner looks delicious!!
Take it from another "annual" cake baker - you need an electric hand mixer! And they are great for whipping cream too...
Delicious dinner followed by Desperate Housewives...the perfect evening!
You turned on a treat! Wonderful looking dinner, & happy looking birthday person.
That looks beautiful. You always do such a great job.
I agree the electric hand mixer is cheap and cheerful. Does a wonderful job for those quick things like cake batter. I inherited a big ancient Kenwood CHef hardc0re mixer but haven't ever used it.
I want to eat your carrots! (There's nothing sinister in that statement, btw.)
Happy Birthday AB! Looks like you spoiled him. And then all that romantic candlelight went for nothin'? He was snoozing away while you watched DH?
I am a baking whizz and all I have is a hand-mixer. I do have longing thoughts about a proper mixmaster (possible request to my folks for f*cough*th birthday coming up...) but seriously, where would I put it?
Stephanie Alexander seems very keen on whizzing up cakes in the food processor, so you could consider that as a last ditch?
*That dinner looks so fabulous!* Happy birthday, Mr. h&b!
I have had the same hand mixer for 20 years and am sad to say that it needs replacing. I love it and will be sad to lose it.
Looks like you made lovely family memories. Happy birhtday to your guy.
Warm, cozy and scrumptious looking. I'm glad it turned out so good. Yes, as muzbot says, lucky indeed ; )
Happy birthday to AB! dinner looks delish.
I also highly recommend the purchase of a cheapie hand held electric beater. I think mine was sub $20 and I probably it use more than the kenwood. Excellent for the occasional baker.
Happy birthday, Mr H&B!
Can you prepare and cook my next birthday dinner please h&b? Looks superb.
